Hope and Sobriety: Jesus’ Words in Matthew 24

“And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. [13] But the one who endures to the end will be saved. [14] And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”  Matthew 24:12-14

Dear Rock Family,

Lately I’ve been sitting with Jesus’ words in Matthew 24. This chapter is an amazing caption of a private dialog between Jesus and His disciples where they ask Him ‘what will happen at the end of this age’ and we receive great insight into His warnings and His instructions about the sign of His coming, the end of this age, and the dawning of the next. This chapter should fill us with great hope, but also with holy sobriety. This hope is profound. Our King is coming again. He comes unmistakably, like lightning (v. 27), coming on the clouds with power and great glory (v. 30), to reward His faithful servants (24:47; 25:10, 21, 34). And yet there is sobriety as well. Before that Day there will be intense testing (v. 9), many led astray and falling away (vv. 10–11), and love for Jesus growing cold as lawlessness increases (v. 12).

But right in the middle of that sobering picture, Jesus gives us courage. He speaks of a people who endure to the end (v. 13). Scripture calls them overcomers! Those who conquer “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…not love their lives even unto death” (Rev. 12:11). The only way we can hold our lives with open hands in this age is if we have a greater vision for the age to come. When our hope is fixed on the resurrection and the coming kingdom, we can lay down the temporary things (this age) to gain all that Jesus has purchased for us.

Jesus not only foresees an enduring people, but He also foresees a witnessing people. He prophesies of the church boldly proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom to the nations (v. 14), filling the earth with the announcement that Jesus’s reign is near. We’re going to dive into Matthew 24 in a deeper way this Sunday, but until then, let’s pray this together.

Lord Jesus, train my heart to love You more than the comforts of this age. Through future pressure, keep me in Your love and anchored in the age to come. Guard me from the deception of the enemy, and strengthen me to tell others to put their trust in Your death, resurrection, and soon return. You are my greatest treasure. Amen.

Love,
Pastor Marcus and your Rock Staff
