He Is My Portion

“I say, “The LORD is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him.” 

-Lamentations 3:24 CSB

 

Hello Rock Family,

Following up from Pastor Mike & JR’s Sunday teaching on inheritance, I wanted to add an additional encouragement. 

There is so much that we inherit in the Christian life. We inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Cor 6:10), incorruption (1 Cor 15:50), salvation (Heb 1:4), promises (Heb 6:12), eternal life (Heb 9:15), and we see that our inheritance is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept for us (1 Pet 1:4). Greater than all of that, however, is what the Psalmist writes in this passage:

“Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever.”
-Psalms 73:25-26 CSB

To have God, or in a new covenant understanding, Jesus, as my portion (which is another way of talking about what we will inherit) is greater than anything else. To know that someday I’ll receive the full measure of God (Eph. 3:19) –an experience that would kill me today–is the most valuable inheritance. Unfortunately, we sometimes lose appreciation of the most valuable things. 

JR and Mike both talked about the importance of family. How many times have we failed to value the people who mean the most to us because we were busy with something ultimately less important?

I know I’ve had seasons in my life where I’ve lost value for the greatest inheritance (Jesus) because I fixed my eyes on other things; some of them good (blessings, anointing, career, etc.).

When we have Jesus, we have everything.
There is nothing better! 

This week, as you think about inheritance–both what you will someday inherit and how you can fight for others to receive their inheritance–remember that Jesus is the ultimate inheritance. 

Father God, would you help us today by the power of your Holy Spirit to teach us to see Jesus rightly. Would you open the eyes of our heart with understanding so that we can see the great and immeasurable treasure in the person – Jesus Christ. We ask that you keep us from getting caught up in other worldly pursuits, fears, worries, passions, dreams, and desires, but instead to always keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Amen
