Dependence on God in Prayer
“In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us, with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26-27 CSB
I used to think that the statement, “because we do not know what to pray” described the situation when you’ve prayed for 5 minutes and you already told God everything you want Him to do, and you aren’t sure what else to pray about. And while the Spirit is willing to help us in those moments, what I’ve come to realize is that I was approaching prayer all wrong.
I was thinking that the Holy Spirit would help me to pray my way, better. When in fact, He wants to teach us how to pray His way.
It’s not that the Holy Spirit’s help is a turbo on our 4-cylinder car engine. Something that helps us get a little more horsepower, but uses our same design. When the Spirit helps us to pray by praying according to the will of God, it upgrades our prayers to a whole new jet engine vehicle!
For non-mechanical people, a 4 cylinder VW Jetta has 115 horsepower (HP), if you get one with a turbo it jumps up to 147 HP. But a jet engine has 30,000 HP….the equivalent power of 260 Jetta’s.
As I grow in prayer I am learning to be dependent on God (and His Spirit) to lead my prayers. I approach God in prayer with the humility that says, “I don’t know what to ask for, but I’m confident you do. Will you give me Your words so I can pray Your will?”
This week, as you make time for prayer, pause before you begin. I want to challenge you to ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom, discernment, and understanding about the will of God. Ask that He would give you the words to pray.
Father God, we ask that by your Spirit you would help us to pray according to Your will. Forgive us when we’ve rushed into prayer with our to-do list, and instead re-orient our thinking to be dependent on you for the words to pray. We ask that you would divinely inspire our prayer times with the things that are on Your heart. “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
I hope to see you at the conference next week. We’ll have lots of opportunities to pray together, and I’m expectant that it will be remarkable.
