All My Fountains Are In You

“As they make music they will sing, ‘All my fountains are in you.’”

Psalm 87:7 NIV

I had to google this verse recently after hearing a worship song that said, “All my fountains are in you,”. I thought it was a nice sentiment, but I didn’t understand the context or the meaning. I was blessed by what followed as I had a small impromptu Bible-study with the Lord.

The phrase comes from Psalm 87, which is a psalm about Jerusalem; specifically the privileges of citizenship in Jerusalem. This is timely since Pastor Marcus has given us two excellent teachings on God’s purposes for Jerusalem and the people of Israel.

I’m stirred by how this passage describes that the Lord, after Jesus returns, will give the privilege of Jerusalem citizenship to Gentile people. This is all the more reason to pray for God’s purposes in that land—that someday we will be counted as natives.

And although that’s fun to think about, what really caught my attention was the implications of fountains in an ancient Near-East agricultural society. We’re so blessed to have clean running water and indoor plumbing. I don’t even think about where the water comes from–it’s just there, in my house. But when this Scripture was written, they relied on natural springs and rivers and fountains. And if a fountain dried up, you had nothing.

Most businesses were farming or livestock, which require a lot of water. Families needed water for life, cooking, and hygiene. To say that, “All my fountains are in you,” is to say that “You are the source of all my income, all my life, all my comfort, all my security, and all my joy”.

Father God, today we make a fresh declaration that all of our fountains are in You. We declare You as the source of everything (Col 1:16). You are the rivers of living water inside us (John 7:38). We choose to look to You, and recognize You as the one who provides everything we need (Read Gen 21:14-19). Amen.

I hope you’re enjoying the Advent season and look forward to worshiping and praying alongside you this Wednesday and Sunday.

P.S. I think it’s great when worship songs recite verses that prophecy “they will sing”, and then I end up singing as a partial fulfillment of Scripture thousands of years later. How wonderful to find ourselves in God’s story.  Listen to this!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I41f8hZeB6U
