We Sow, But God Gives The Growth

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.  So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.  Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.  For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building. ”
– 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 CSB

It was such a joy last week to get to share many of the words and much of the vision God is giving us for the future of The Rock.  I wanted to reiterate something Pastor Mike shared as we reflect on last week and prepare our hearts for next week: 

The word of God is like a seed (Luke 8:11) and if you leave a seed in a barn, in a packet, or on your counter–it will always just be a seed. In order for a seed to produce a harvest it needs to be planted, watered, weeded, fertilized, tended, and it needs the nutrients from the soil and light and warmth from the sun…or the Son. 🙂  We should take the word of God (the written scripture and what’s revealed by the Spirit) and work to sow it into the soil of our heart (Luke 8:15) in faith, and then water, weed, fertilize and tend to it through prayer, fasting, worship, meditation on Scripture, and obedience. As we do our part, it is God who brings the growth and the increase. All of our effort, although very much necessary to align with God’s will, is still completely dependent on God’s grace and favor. 

With this in mind, I want to encourage us to grab hold of the promises and the prophetic visions the Lord has given our church and begin to plant and water, or ‘hold it firmly and with perseverance produce fruit from the seed’. 

“But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word with a good and virtuous heart, and hold it firmly, and produce fruit with perseverance.” Luke 8:15 NASB

Let’s respond to God’s kindness and faithfulness with labor (which will be rewarded) and build God’s kingdom together. 

Father God, would you stir our hearts for this vision. Would you till the soil of my heart and help to plant the seeds of your Word by faith. Give me the strength to tend, water, and weed as you bring the increase. We ask for insight into what our specific role and purpose is and we believe that You will be working in us to give us the will and the power to do your good purposes (Phil 2:13).
