He Who Began a Good Work in Y’All

“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”   – Philippians 1:6 ESV

As I have been processing our last two Vision Sunday’s and our calling to the local church, regional unity, kingdom resources, and government, I have felt led to pray the verse above for our church family. I have typically understood this in an individual way…that the Holy Spirit dwells within me and wants to bring forth the plans and purposes that God has for my life. But this verse was not actually addressed to an individual in the church of Philippi, but to the community as a whole. The better translation would be, “He who began a good work in you all”. Or the proper Texan translation, “He who began a good work in y’all”:) 

God has spoken to The Rock and begun many good works among us as a people and my prayer in this season is that the Holy Spirit would bring forth these good works to full maturity, not just in our individual lives, but among us as a church family for His glory. 

Not only that but we should pray and labor for these good works with the ultimate Day in view, the Return of Jesus. This is what Paul means when he says “the Day of Jesus Christ” (Rom. 2:5, 16; 13:12; 1 Cor. 1:8; 3:13; 5:5; 2 Cor. 1:14; Eph 4:30; Phil 1:6, 10; 2:16; 1 Thess. 5:2, 4, 5, 8; 2 Thess 1:10; 2:2, 3; 2 Tim. 1:12, 18; 4:8)…in case you are wondering. His eye is on us and He will not overlook one single act of love done in His name when you stand before Him at the resurrection (Heb. 6:10). 

I want to encourage you this week to continue to ask the Lord what part He has for you to play concerning this vision He has given to our church family. It will take frequent corporate prayer and fasting, a deep commitment to the Word of God, regularly encouraging one another to stay committed in our daily obedience to Jesus, and exhorting one another to acts of radical faith, and more… But I believe that the Lord has each of us at The Rock “for such a time as this”, and as a leader I want to express that we cannot accomplish God’s vision without y’all. 🙂

Jesus, let us be a people who take seriously all that You have spoken and confirmed,  and let us run with perseverance the race You have set before us (Heb. 12:1) knowing that He who called us to these things is Faithful (1 Thess. 5:24) and a Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6).  Amen
