God’s Father Heart Revealed Through Jesus
Jesus’ prayer in John 17:25-26 — “Righteous Father, though the world does NOT know you, I know you and they know that you have sent me. I have made You known to them, and will continue to make You known in order that the love You have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Jesus’ words in John 15:10 — “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in His love.”
God the Father…the first person of the Trinity! Who is accessible and revealed only through the Son (Jn 14:6) and only by the Spirit (Jn 16:15)! I am only aware of God being identified as Father 11 times in the Old Testament, yet Jesus almost always used the term Father when referring to God in the Gospels to reveal God as Father to us. In the book of John alone, Jesus refers to God as Father more than 100 times…revealing the heart God has for each of us as our heavenly Father!
Matt 7:11 “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him?
This theme of God’s Father-heart is one of the most evident and beautiful themes in the New Testament Scriptures. God didn’t create us to be slaves for Him. He isn’t looking for us to be robots that do His bidding. And He didn’t make us just so He could be Lord over us. Our heavenly Father created us in His own image and likeness for the purpose of having a deep, intimate relationship with Him. We see this theme over and over again in the Scriptures. Here are a few verses to meditate on…Jeremiah 24:7; 32:38-41; Ezekiel 36:26-29; 37:27-28; 2 Corinthians 6:16; and Revelation 21:3,7…which I love because God again shows us His will for us to be His sons (and daughters), which positions God as our Father!
Revelation 21:3,7 “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God….He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be His God and he will be My son.”
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He started with a mind-blowing concept for them…that they were now to address God with the precious and intimate words…“Our Father in heaven”. How many times have we said the Lord’s Prayer, and completely missed the significance of the words “Our Father”? Pause for a moment and ponder this concept…that when we pray, we are to come to the Almighty God of the universe and address Him as ‘Our Father”!
Quick story…our family just returned from a vacation to Martha’s Vineyard and while there, Kristi and I visited what I would consider the most well-known business on the island for some coffee and muffins – the Black Dog bakery. You have probably seen a ‘black dog’ sticker on the back of vehicles. That’s the Black Dog bakery. 😊 As we walked out on their dock to see the boats, two young boys were just waking up from sleeping on a yacht that was docked. We started talking and one of the boys nonchalantly mentioned that the large sailing ship anchored in the bay was his dads. Well, that sailing ship is famous and owned by the owner of the Black Dog. It was at that point we realized these two young boys were the sons of the Black Dog owner! They didn’t realize who their father was other than ‘dad’, but WE DID! Without any effort, without any great works, these two boys had become heirs of a great inheritance with a father who could bless them abundantly!
The question for us is…do we know who our heavenly Father is? The God of the Universe calls us Sons and by the Spirit, we can call Him “Abba Father” and as sons we have been made heirs to Christ’s eternal inheritance!
“Because we are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba Father’. So we are no longer slaves, but sons, and since we are sons, God has made us also heirs.” (Gal 4:6-7)
I love you all! Happy early Father’s Day!
