Godly Fear, Humility, & Obedience Lead to Powerful Prayers
“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission.” Heb 5:7 NIV
The humility we walk in is directly connected to our fear of the Lord and our obedience to Jesus and this way of life positions us to live in the delight of our heavenly Father! So when we delight in God – when we walk in humility, in the fear of the Lord, and in obedience to His ways, – He delights in us and responds to our prayers and petitions!
“The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” -Ps 147:11
“Whoever turns his ear away from hearing instruction, even his prayer is detestable.” -Prov 28:9
So back to Hebrews 5…when we read verses 7-9, it is important to take note that this is “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth,” which was only during His 33 years leading up to the cross. This was a time in history when Jesus became flesh! (Jn 1:14) The Bible tells us in Philip 2:6-8 that Jesus emptied Himself (of the form of God), and took the nature and form of a bond-servant, being made in human likeness and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross. This is mind-blowing that Jesus humbled Himself and gave up everything out of obedience to the Father, so that He could become the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him!
Can we go back and focus on verse 7 of Hebrews 5? While Jesus was living on this same earth we now live on, He cried out to God the Father with prayers and requests, but it was NOT because He was the son of God that He was heard by God. It was because of the reverent submission to God…which is the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 22:4 (NIV) tells us that “Humility is the fear of the Lord.” And we know that true humility is living in complete obedience to God!
So take a moment to meditate on this… God doesn’t always hear everyone’s prayers. He hears the prayers of those who live in reverent submission, in obedience, in humility, and in the fear of the Lord. These are His righteous ones…the ones who live by faith by hearing God and obeying! John 9:31 says that “God listens to the ones who are God-fearing and obey His will.” Romans 6:16-18 tells us that “obedience leads to righteousness…and through wholeheartedly obeying the teachings…we become slaves to righteousness.” And James 5:16 says, “…the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Prayer is powerful and can supernaturally shift situations and lives…but it is not only dependent on our cries and petitions, but also on the way we live our lives!
Lord, may our lives be a living sacrifice of worship to you, that we would not live to please ourselves, but to please you and live holy and righteous lives before you Lord. Help us Holy Spirit to delight in the fear of the Lord and walk humbly with you as we live in full obedience to your commands and teachings…in reverent submission to your ways in place of our will. Thank you, Lord, that as we delight in You and commit our ways to You, You order our steps, make our path straight, give us the desires of our heart, uphold us with your hand, and delight in us! Amen! (Rom 12, Ps 37)
May your prayers be powerful and effective! I love you and I am praying for you.
